The Brazilian Association for the Development of Nuclear Activities (ABDAN) is holding the Nuclear Communication Experience 26 event this Tuesday (18), in Rio de Janeiro, bringing together press professionals and nuclear industry representatives to discuss the sector’s challenges and opportunities. At the opening of the meeting, ABDAN’s president, Celso Cunha, highlighted that Brazil has the potential to significantly expand its nuclear power generation. However, the segment needs clear signals from the government to encourage new investments.
“The National Energy Plan (PNE) 2055 points to 14 GW of nuclear capacity by 2055. That’s why it is very important to signal the resumption of Angra 3 and at least another 1 GW of nuclear power in the Ten-Year Energy Plan (PDE) 2036. In practice, investors look at the ten-year plans before making an investment decision,” said Cunha. “Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) appear as alternatives to coal-fired plants. Meanwhile, Petrobras is also evaluating nuclear reactors. So there are many opportunities,” he added.
Cunha also stated that the nuclear sector cannot be reduced to Angra 3 alone. According to the executive, the sector’s agenda is not limited to the energy issue, but encompasses a series of other projects, including the nuclear submarine, the Brazilian Multipurpose Reactor (RMB), element irradiation, among others.
Rosatom’s director for Latin America, Ivan Dybov (photo above), also spoke during the event’s opening ceremony and highlighted the strategic importance of the Brazilian market. “Brazil is very important to us. It is a strategic partner. We supply isotopes for nuclear medicine and also enriched uranium for the country’s nuclear plants,” he recalled. The executive also said that Brazil needs to address the need to develop the sector as a whole, taking advantage of opportunities in the areas of nuclear fuel and nuclear waste treatment.
This is the third edition of Nuclear Communication, an event organized annually by ABDAN to further bring together press professionals in the sector and discuss the strategic challenges of nuclear energy in Brazil, including energy security, demand growth, energy transition, human capital development, and communication with society.
